This article from the National Park Service (NPS) is about the hobby of bird watching or as they call it "Birding." It describes the benefits of getting into the hobby like physical fitness, getting to be in nature, and the minimum cost of participating. Another benefit that they themselves provide is the variety of locations (parks and monuments) and thus variety of species of birds to view and enjoy. The article also provides certain suggestions on which gear to bring and programs within their parks for fellow watchers to meet, greet, and spot birds together. Whether you're doing as a family or on your own, "Birding," is a nice, catchier, name to attract people into the hobby of bird watching.
Birding is very low-cost, can be done anywhere, anytime, and very rewarding to see something new, to be able to name what you see, and to make discoveries.
My opinion on the term "Birding," is that its a nicer, more modern take on the hobby. Not only is a catchier name for the activity, it allows the possibly sigma that its one for an older generation that have nothing to do, to not taint any new comers from being disinterested. Birding is one that, in my opinion, is a more marketable term then expressing the mouthful of a name like bird watching. So, to now know of this term it may make getting more people into the hobby could be a lot easier to convince.
